U.S. Sanctions Myanmar Warlord and Militia Over Cyber Scams Involving Cryptocurrency Fraud
The United States has sanctioned Saw Chit Thu, leader of Myanmar’s Karen National Army (KNA), along with his two sons and the militia group itself, for orchestrating large-scale cyber scams. These operations include cryptocurrency-related fraud schemes that have reportedly cost U.S. victims over $2 billion in 2022 alone.
The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) highlighted the group’s involvement in transnational crimes such as human trafficking and cross-border smuggling, alongside their cybercriminal activities. The sanctions aim to disrupt the financial networks supporting these illicit operations.
